Luke 22 – The Last Supper, Betrayal, and Gethsemane

Luke 22 begins the passion narrative in earnest. In this chapter, Jesus gathers with His disciples for the Last Supper, offers Himself as the true Passover Lamb, and prepares for His darkest hour. It is a chapter of divine love, human weakness, and unwavering obedience.

The Final Meal and the Final Test

The shadow of the cross looms larger. As enemies conspire, Jesus calmly prepares His disciples for what’s to come.

✔ The Passover is prepared.
✔ Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper.
✔ The disciples argue over greatness.
✔ Jesus predicts Peter’s denial.
✔ In Gethsemane, Christ prays in agony.
✔ Judas arrives with soldiers. Jesus is arrested.

📖 Luke 22:19 – “This is my body, which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”

🔎 Jesus faces betrayal and death—but offers Himself willingly as the Lamb of God.

Luke 22:1–23 – The Last Supper and the Betrayer

📖 Luke 22:2–3 – “And the chief priests… sought how they might kill him… Then entered Satan into Judas…”

🔎 Judas becomes a vessel for darkness, choosing betrayal for gain. Yet even this fulfills prophecy and serves the plan of redemption.

📖 Luke 22:8–13 – “Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.”

🔎 Jesus observes Passover with divine precision. Every element of the meal foreshadows His sacrifice.

📖 Luke 22:19–20 – “This is my body… This cup is the new testament in my blood…”

🔎 The Old Covenant is being fulfilled. A new covenant is sealed in Christ’s blood. Communion becomes a living memorial of redemption.

📖 Luke 22:21–22 – “The hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table…”

🔎 Jesus knows what Judas will do—and still washes his feet (John 13). His love endures, even in betrayal.

➡️ The table of the Lord is not just for the worthy—it is for the willing.

Luke 22:24–38 – Servanthood and Warning

📖 Luke 22:24–26 – “He that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.”

🔎 Even in His final hours, Jesus teaches humility. True greatness in the kingdom is servanthood.

📖 Luke 22:31–32 – “Simon, Simon… Satan hath desired to have you… But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.”

🔎 Jesus intercedes before Peter even falls. He doesn’t prevent the sifting—but promises restoration.

📖 Luke 22:36 – “He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.”

🔎 Jesus prepares His disciples for coming hostility—not with violence, but with soberness. A shift is occurring.

➡️ Leadership in God’s kingdom flows from love, not position. And warnings are mercy before the storm.

Luke 22:39–53 – Gethsemane and Betrayal

📖 Luke 22:42 – “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

🔎 The agony in Gethsemane reveals the true cost of the cross. Jesus surrenders not only His body—but His will.

📖 Luke 22:44 – “His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

🔎 A medical condition known as hematidrosis—rare but real under extreme stress. This was no casual prayer—this was spiritual war.

📖 Luke 22:47–48 – “Judas… drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said… Betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?”

🔎 The kiss, a sign of affection, is twisted into a symbol of betrayal. Judas betrays not out of hatred—but for gain.

➡️ Jesus surrenders fully to the Father’s will—while His disciples sleep and scatter.

Luke 22:54–71 – Peter’s Denial and the Trial Begins

📖 Luke 22:61–62 – “And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter… And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.”

🔎 Jesus doesn’t condemn—He looks. That look breaks Peter’s heart. Grace finds him in the fall.

📖 Luke 22:67–70 – “Art thou the Christ? tell us… Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

🔎 Jesus openly declares His identity—knowing it will seal His fate. He chooses truth over survival.

➡️ In the midst of injustice, Jesus stands unwavering. His silence is strength. His word is final.

Final Reflection: Will You Stand or Scatter?

📌 Are you drawing closer to Jesus—or drifting like Judas?
📌 Will you watch with Him—or sleep through the battle?
📌 Will you deny Him—or rise after the fall?

📖 Luke 22:42 – “Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

🔥 In the garden, the war was won. Victory begins with surrender.
